From analog video over SDI/HD-SDI to transport over IP multicast with ST 2110. IT technology is replacing the traditional transport methods. Uncompressed as well as compressed.

For distribution, increasingly efficient video and audio codecs are being developed. Starting with MPEG2 through AVC and HEVC up to VVC, each generation has seen efficiency improvements up to doubling. This also supports resolutions of 4K and beyond.

While just a few years ago a broadcast rack was stuffed with dedicated devices specialized for certain tasks, today almost everything can be implemented on standard servers. And towering crossbars are replaced by IP switches.

But that's not all: New distribution techniques over IP complement the "classic" terrestrial, cable, and satellite distribution. The internet is becoming increasingly important, OTT threatens to displace the classic distribution channels, on-demand video is replacing the traditional, linear television more and more.

The next step in development is already available: You no longer buy devices, but rather rent services that can be deployed as needed.

• Worked for a system integrator as a project manager for countless DVB projects, in particular compression centers for DVB-S/S2 and DVBT/T2 at public broadcasters in Germany (turnkey projects) as well as at customers in Italy, the United Kingdom and Scandinavia
• Self-employed with Mifotec since 2021. Focus: Advice and support in the area of ​​DVB as well as other TV distribution channels (OTT)
